RATS is an acronym for the Religion of Art, Theatre and Science. We are a collective of people who work together to promote art, education, scientific investigation, equality, and reality.
Not specifically. We welcome people of all denominations to come and learn, listen and participate in all of the events and meetings they wish to engage in.
Our goal is to establish public safe spaces in communities for people to gather to collectively work for the betterment of our society by acknowledging reality and acting in ways that promote education and action. A place to listen to a speech about the advances of climate change, a place to paint with your friends, sing in the choir, create works of art with your hands or using technology, do science experiments or grab a controller and play a video game on the couch. Our goal is to ensure all humans have the same rights regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or wealth. Our goal is ensure people aren't discriminated against at their place of work for choosing a safer alternative to alcohol, marijuana. Our goal is to ensure art and reality share the same constitutional rights and protections that all other religions enjoy.
There are many ways to become a member of RATS. You can like our FB page. You can publicly declare your new religion on social media and help spread the love and protections. You can send a tax-deductible contribution to RATS. If you would like some recognition for your donation we can arrange something with each individual donor to ensure their efforts are recognized in a fashion that meets their expectations. You can order one of our shirts or hats once we have them for sale online or in person. You can throw some money into the jar for the musicians and other performers at one of our concerts. You can ask the scientists questions about the topic they are giving a speech on. You can come play video games. Or you can just say you are a member of RATS when someone tries to discriminate against your constitutional freedoms. We are here for you however proactive or engaged you'd like to be.
A board operates the functionality of RATS. The break down is found in our bylaws with more detail but the summary is, there are three Deans of Art, Theatre & Science and thousands of potential Deputies. The Dean is responsible for overseeing the activities of that umbrella category. For example, the Dean of Art might help the Deputy of Painting figure out how to promote the next class or acquire materials. Deputies are also on the board. There is also an Arbiter. The function of the Arbiter is to keep the process moving. The Arbiter has no voting power. (*see bylaws for singular exception) Our board meetings function by way of those who choose to be there. We use a blend of Robert's rules and the Portland Method to guide our discussions or agenda. What gets discussed and voted on is decided by majority vote by those in attendance. RATS was designed to move swiftly through the decision making process and get to the action part of the plan as quickly as possible.
Yes. RATS is currently recognized by the state of Washington and has members in California, Oregon, Idaho and the UK. More chapters will be opening in various states soon. If you'd like to open a new chapter please contact the current Arbiter.
